Love this. Thanks a lot for sharing. The hustler is de-facto the role that no one talks about but is always in my opinion the reason for early success. Someone, somewhere showed plenty of hustle for any company to get off the ground.

We should connect, I might have a few prospects for you. I am totally against the conservative Canadian approach to business. We are a risk averse culture that is often scared away by big ambitious ideas, which is why we don't see incredibly successful companies coming out of Canada. My take on the US companies you mention (will be addressed in my ext blog post) is that it is much are to create a beautiful, incredible product that people love, than a business model. If someone can create that, they should be funded for that.

Re: Monetization: The Canadian Startup Paradox

Apologies if I seemed unclear in my viewpoint. I think the further one can go down the technical path be it "Rails" or Python, etc is a huge asset but not an all encompassing one. One of the main challenges you are facing is a short supply for ever growing demand of developers. Money talks, bullshit walks, and a lot of this technical wizards are rather risk averse and they are not turned on very much by the equity they are offered at their every turn.

If it were easy, everyone would be doing it so until then - search hi and low for what you are seeking and you stand a good chance to find your technical superstars.

@JaretManuel

Re: Monetization: The Canadian Startup Paradox

Adam,

I love this article and it is a huge frustration of mine with this country I love. We should be proud of being Canadian but somehow we need to shake our reserved roots a little and take more risk and think bigger. We are not Silicon Valley, we are not the USA - if people want that, then they have to go there (which I have no qualms with whatsoever), simply recognize where you are and be "that". No place in Canada will never be the "Valley", and nor should it.

The dynamics of venture capital are vastly different from our Bars & Stars neighbours so it is simply impossible to place ourselves on the same stage but that doesn't have to limit ourselves from going big.

@JaretManuel

Re: Where to Play Indoor Tennis in Toronto

Appreciate the comment Joe. Rather the opportunity cost in Canada of focusing on revenue rather than critical mass is that we are likely unable to to build wildly successful companies showcased by acquisitions such as yesterday's.

It is paradoxical to suggest, as so many now do, that we should look to build bigger companies when the recipe for their success (shown yesterday) is so inherently anti-Canadian.

And who's going to hit you for open 3's in the corner if Huddlers moves down south?

Re: Monetization: The Canadian Startup Paradox

How many tec companies with no monitzation plans succeed? Yes, we hear about facebook and twitter but what about the thousands of other companies who build cool products with no real business plan and are out of business a month after launch. It's a big gamble and with significantly fewer and smaller cap VC's in Canada, probably makes sense to leave it to the big fish down south. Further, since it appears funding in the US is more attractive to your business, you should probably pack your bags and move south... plus they have ESPN.
